The Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) has recognized Wahkiakum High School’s Cooper Carlson, a senior standout, as its Athlete of the Week. This prestigious honor highlights Cooper’s exceptional accomplishments not only as a member of the League Championship Boys Varsity Basketball Team but also as a dedicated student and active contributor to his community.

Cooper’s achievements on the court have been nothing short of remarkable. As a key player on the state-qualifying team, Cooper has proven his commitment to excellence and leadership. When asked what this accomplishment means to him, Cooper shared, “Being part of the League Championship team and qualifying for state is something I’ll never forget. It’s not just about the wins, it’s about the bond we built as a team and the lessons we learned together. We pushed each other every day to be better, and I think that’s what made this season so special.”

Off the court, Cooper is equally impressive. Balancing academics with athletics is no easy feat, but Cooper has managed to excel in both areas. “It’s all about staying organized and setting priorities,” he explained. “There are sacrifices you have to make, but I’ve always believed that hard work pays off. My coaches and teachers have been really supportive, and that’s made a big difference.”

In addition to his success as a student-athlete, Cooper has also made a meaningful impact through his community service efforts. He spoke passionately about his involvement, saying, “Giving back to the community is really important to me. I’ve been fortunate to have so many people support me throughout my life, and I think it’s important to pay that forward. One of my favorite projects was volunteering at a youth basketball camp. It was amazing to see the kids’ excitement and share my love of the game with them.”

The recognition from the WIAA is a testament to Cooper’s well-rounded character and dedication. Reflecting on the honor, he said, “It feels incredible to be recognized as the WIAA Athlete of the Week. I’m so grateful to my teammates, coaches, and family for their support. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. This award isn’t just for me, it’s for everyone who’s been part of my journey.”

As Cooper looks ahead to his future, he hopes to carry the lessons he’s learned through sports, academics, and service into whatever comes next. “Basketball has taught me so much about perseverance, teamwork, and leadership,” he said. “These are values I’ll take with me into college and beyond.”

The entire school and community are proud of Cooper Carlson’s accomplishments and the example he sets for others. Congratulations to Cooper on this well-deserved recognition!
